It all starts with a business plan and yet a recent study* suggests that four in five businesses do not have a working business plan. Sure you can succeed without a plan but it sure tips the odds in your favour if you have one.

A good business plan allows you to confidently outline the stepping stones to reach your goals. It helps you get the team on the same page, talk to partners, suppliers and financiers, align your resources and work out what to measure. It doesn't have to be a weighty tome but it's got to be comprehensive enough to capture your thinking. Remember it's not the size of the plan that matters it's the thinking that goes into it.

MEET
JOHN HOLLAND

John Holland is a marketing strategist with over 40 years executive management experience.

He built two marketing & communication businesses, both of which he sold. He has worked with a who's who of blue chip Australian organisations in the consumer, service, business to business and not for profit markets.

Over the last decade he has focused on adapting that big company thinking to the SME and Purpose sectors.

John holds a BA (Hons) from Durham University and a Postgraduate Marketing qualification from Kingston University, both in the UK. He is a Fellow of the Australian Marketing Institute (FAMI), a Certified Practising Marketer and a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Marketing is a team game and I'm grateful to have some great influences along the way.

Inspirational presentations from the likes of Philip Kotler, Al Ries & Jack Trout, Jay Abrahams and James Anderson have shaped my thinking but it is the people I've worked with that have inspired me the most.

From Annie Hogg at Kingston who taught me the marketing basics that still serve me well today, to Joan Lovell and Doug Goldie back in London in the 70's - both outstanding in understanding the customer and knowing how to layout a business case.

In WA, Noel Darby succinctly communicated the essentials of the advertising craft whilst in Sydney the teams at The Sales Machine and Promotional Thinking were packed with influencers who worked extraordinary hours to deliver for their clients.

Jef Rowlison, my partner of almost a decade, had a mantra that still resonates with me today; if it's good, call it good, if it's bad call it bad, if it's mediocre call it bad.

Then there are the sounding boards that every business person needs… Ross Pearson, Ashley Hurst and Tony Simms during my AdPartners Group years and John Egan, my TEC Chair of 7 years and of late another ex TEC Chair, Will Carpenter.
